EGWU SAM OMINYI (DOCTOR) was born today June 20 in 1954, he hails from Ezamgbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area Ebonyi State. H attended the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu State University of Science and Technology. He worked as a University lecturer at Enugu State University of Technology (ESUT) Enugu; served as a Commissioner under the military government in Ebonyi State. Served as Governor of Ebonyi State (1999-2003, 2003-2007); served as a federal Minister of Education 2008 to April 2010; contested and won the senatorial seat for Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone on the platform of People’s Democratic Party; served as the Senate committee chairman on industry. He happily married to Mrs. Eunice Uzoamaka Egwu.

1977,July 28th:  A former Second-Lieutenant in the Army, Hassan Klaji, of Camp N.A.I.C. Tego Barracks, Apapa, was sentenced to death by the Lagos State Armed Robbery Tribunal. He was guilty of robbing a man, Lofty Anyaegbu of his Peugeot 404 saloon car valued N5, 000 and the sum of N6, 000 while armed with a sub-machine gun, along Apapa Road, Lagos on September 26, 1975.

TODAY IN HISTORY: Dele Udo was shot dead

Dele Udo, (Dele Ndubuisi Udo) a U.S. – based Nigerian athlete was shot dead at a Police check-point in Lagos. Dele Udo from Umuahia in Abia state was born on May 24, 1957, He was 6’1’’ tall, and was based in the United States of America. He was a world class quarter miler and hurdler, who had set a joint world record with Dan Lavitt, Ed Ofili and Scott Clark in 1978. He was a collegiate champion at the University of Missouri in the 1970’s and competed in the men’s 400 metres at the 1980 Summer Olympics.
He was a two-time member of the Nigerian Olympic team of 1976 and 1980. He was also the holder of several National Collegiate Athletic Association records in the USA. He had returned home, for a national sports assignment, to prepare for the All African Games. He was shot and killed by a policeman at a checkpoint, at Ojuelegba in the Surulere area of Lagos while going to have dinner after training for the day at the National Stadium. He left behind his three months old young pregnant American wife.

Today In History:UDO EGBERT UDOMA was Born

UDO EGBERT UDOMA (JUSTICE) was born today June 21 in 1917, in Ibekwe Ntanaran Akama, Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State. He was educated at Methodist College, Uzuakoli, 1932, Trinity College, University of Dublin, Ireland, 1938-42 and St. Catherine’s College, Oxford University, 1942-45. He earned a doctorate degree in law and was acknowledged as “an orator of unparalleled feat.” He was elected into the House of Representatives 1952-59; a High Court Judge 1962-65.
He was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, 1969, where he breathed his scholarly and sharp mind into the interpretation of the law. He was chairman of the Constituent Assembly between 1977-78, the body that gave birth to the 1979 Constitution, the chosen guide for the Fourth Republic A minority activist, a federalist, he founded the Cross River/Ogoja (COR) Slate Movement as a vehicle to agitate for the creation of states.
He was married to Grace Bassey and they had children, among whom is Barrister Udoma Udo Udoma, a corporate lawyer and Senator-elect of the Fourth Republic. He died on February 2, 1998.
